ALEXANDRA

Our Magnificent Alexandra takes our collective breath away. She is one of the most exquisite looking dogs that we have met. Alexandra is a beautiful Siberian Husky, with the breed characteristic ice blue eyes. She is a great example of breed standard in her proud stance and formidible structure.

Only one year old, Alexandra found herself a city stray, homeless and taking refuge in an overcrowded animal control facility. She did not fare well in the shelter and failed the shelter evaluation tests for adoption. In most cases, this means euthansia.

When we were alerted to Alexandra's plight, we jumped at the chance to welcome her into our foster home. Often a dog's behavior is adversely affected by the harsh shelter environment, and we usually find that once a dog decompresses and relaxes into foster care, a very different behavior profile emerges.

We were pleased to see Alexandra adapt so beautifully and have fantastic progress to report. The shelter vet originally thought that Alexandra was a
young two year old adult, but now that we have spent a good deal of time with her, we see many puppyish behaviors, and think that she may well be 10 months to a year old. Of course, there are no birth records for stray dogs.

Immediately upon release from the shelter, Alexandra gave grateful kisses and seemed thrilled to be on the road to a better life. She will be a dream come true for the savvy, experienced Siberian lover, who can make the time committment to her training. As a pup, Alexandra has had no obvious obedience work. As a Husky, she is true to breed in her independent and aloof nature. She is evolving into a glorious Alpha Diva with an intelligence to be marvelled at.

Alexandra is a strong, robust girl, althought petite for the breed at 40 pounds. She is a great candidate for leadership and positive reinforcement training. We also think that, along with a solid exercise regime with an active single or couple, Alexandra needs a personality match with someone who exudes patient, calm, steady persistence, that will convince our mighty Russian beauty that she is not the Empress of Everything.

Alexandra has been facinating to observe as she has integrated into life with other foster dogs, including a female Husky mix and Rottie Shepherd mix, who rule the roost with iron paws. At first she appeared standoffish and kept to herself in the corner. Slowly her puppy curiosity got the better of her and she began to join the games. We see that Alexandra's doggy social skills are a bit behind the learning curve. She has gotten her fair share of rebukes, and each time has adapted her behavior to blend in better. We feel she could join a home with one other dog of a neutral temperment, or she'd be great as an only dog.

We took Alexandra on a weekend trip Super Bowl Sunday to a dog friendly hotel, and she behaved like an angel. She is a dream to travel with, but will get fussy if she is ignored in her crate for too long. Despite the Husky's aloof nature, Alexandra is extremely affectionate and playful. Her play is lively and rambunctious, so we'd like to avoid cats and small children in her forever home.

Alexandra has excellent house manners and is house and crate trained, althought we can guarantee the inevitable accident as she transitions to her new life. She is in excellent health, will be spayed February 27, and will be available for adoption after that. She has been vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper, bordatella, and is microchipped and de-wormed. She has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
