ADOPTED

BEAR

Good Grief! How could the PERFECT puppy, so friendly and beautiful, be a third time inmate at an animal control facility and still be only one year old? Folks come to us clamoring for the Perfect Puppy, so how come our Bear fell through the cracks, over and over again? Enquiring minds want to know!

Like most rescue dogs, it seems that Bear was the victim of bum luck. Puppies have no control over which human is going to pick up the end of that leash, and judging from the vast numbers of adolescent dogs in shelters, there's better than a 50/50 shot that a puppy will draw a nitwit as an owner.

Bear's story says it all. First, at the age of six months, he was brought to the shelter by an owner who had been evicted. Bear thoroughly charmed shelter evaluators, and was immediately adopted. Shortly after adoption, he was hauled back into the shelter by Animal Control officers as a stray, and then was returned to his adoptive owner. And then, this same adopter dumped him, because, after several months, the family suddenly discovered the children were allergic!

As rescue folks, it is our role to sort through this mess 'o malarky, and stop the cycle of confusion for Bear. Now one year old, Bear is in our Connecticut Rescue, and has completely blown us away. He has a superstar dog vibe and could thrive in any kind of home, under the care of patient, determined folks who are prepared to raise an older puppy.

Despite the chaos in Bear's short life, his temperament is so exemplary that he can adapt to just about any kind of situation. He is an extraordinarily social dog, and has lived happily with young children, other dogs and even cats. His dog manners are so outstanding, that he has been used as a helper dog at both his originating shelter, and in our foster home. He has enticed grumpy, antisocial dogs into joyous rough and tumble games.

Bear is a rare treasure in Rescue, and he could easily join the active home of a busy family with children, or an active adult single or couple. The recipe for adoption success is simple exercise and ongoing obedience work. Bear is a high energy dog, who needs a good work out each day, after which he will stretch out for a nap. He is not the kind of dog that can be left alone in a fenced yard to amuse himself, because he will most likely make a run for it out of sheer boredom. Rather, he would love to join his folks on a run or hike, or even a bit of power walking. Bear can keep up a good pace, and then calm down for quiet time.

Bear has been described as a Retriever mix, and we certainly see some physical traits of the Golden and Labrador varieties. Bear is a tall, lean, but strong dog, at a mangeable weight of 50 pounds. He has a showstopping stance, and a short, low shedding coat of a beautiful reddish, golden color. We suspect a tiny bit of Red Doberman Pinscher in his mix, due to his elongated muzzle, in profile, red nose and translucent hazel green eyes. His ears are at perpetual half mast. Bear is a true beauty inside and out.

Bear is ahead of the learning curve in house manners and obedience commands. In the course of his former hard knock life, Bear managed to learn a thing or two. He is nicely house trained, and crate trained, and knows the commands “sit”, “down”, “stay” and “come”. Bear’s favorite game is fetch, and he loves the outdoors, and any activities that engage his working Retriever instincts. Bear needs to engage with his family, and be in the thick of the action. In the hands of motivated adopters, Bear is ready to go the distance to attain his Canine Good Citizenship Certification. Also, he would be a natural champion at Obedience or Field Trial competition.

Bear is in excellent health, and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
