BEAR

Our lumbering, lovable Bear is an absolute hoot. Whoever greenlighted the coupling that produced Bear had one heck of a sense of humor. He joined us recently from a large, overcrowded animal care and control facility, where he charmed everyone that he met, and received top behavior evaluations.

Bear has a unique look, and appears to have a mix of some oddly assorted breeds in his make up. We believe his dominant mix to be German Shepherd and Rottweiler. At 77 pounds, Bear is a big, big boy, and while he has the massive head and thick physique of a Rottweiler, his coloring is classic German Shepherd black and tan. Just for comic relief, we suspect a bit of Basset Hound DNA to explain his short, bowed legs and elongated spine. There's just no other explanation for those comical proportions.

Of all the mighty breeds that may be in Bear's genetic makeup, the Basset Hound tickles our funny bone. Bear enters the room with a blast, as though he's got a score to settle, and then swings into a canine version of Stand-up. This dog was born to love mankind, not to guard anything, and there is not an aggressive bone in his body. In fact, he favors the Basset Hound in his proclivity for laziness and "relaxation." Bear is always ready to give a hug, get his belly scratched, have a snack, and then take a nap.

Bear would make the ideal loving and loyal family dog. He loves everyone and would do very well with older children, or even toddlers, who are resilient enough to get back up after Bear knocks them down in play. He could also join a moderately active single or couple, and despite his size, his energy level would be suitable for apartment living. Just under a year old, Bear's older puppy mojo is in full thottle, but he is one lazy puppy. He's not nearly the energetic whirlwind that most puppies his age would be. He needs a couple of the brisk daily leash walks, but don't be surprised if he insists on the occasional rest stop.

Bear has made a lot of progress on his obedience training. We are teaching the basics of the Canine Good Citizenship Program. He responds well if there is a treat involved. He's not above putting the brakes on an obedience session by refusing to move until a treat is produced. A patient adopter will be able to take Bear all the way through to Canine Good Citizenship Certification.

Bear is in excellent health and is neutered. He has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect the occasional accident as he transitions to a new home. Bear is vaccinated for rabies, parvo, adrenovirus, distemper, coronavirus, leptospirosis. He has been dewormed, and has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been given appropriate heartworm and flea and tick prevention medications.
