BENJI

Our handsome Benji is one of those dogs that makes us scratch our heads and wonder how the heck such a swell dog wound up in City Animal Control. We had expected to hear that he had been a city stray, lost, and taken to the shelter, but, NO, it was his family who abandoned this five year old. Once they did, the clock began ticking. Owner surrendered dogs only have 48 hours before they are eligible for euthanasia.

Benji's behavior evaluations earned him an immediate spot in the shelter adoption program, but he was unlucky enough to get the shelter kennel cough that put him on the fast track to the needle. We intercepted Benji, and provided the time and TLC that he needed for a full recovery, and now he is ready to find his new home.

Benji is a purebred Beagle and is a hardwired scent hound. He loves the outdoors and can amuse himself for hours, investigating the wondrous scents that abound in nature. He bears the classic Beagle tri colors, with saddlebag markings. Benji is an easy to manage, robust and hearty dog, with a sturdy, 32 pound physique. He is not an overly high energy dog, but does need a fair amout of exercise to be happy and healthy.

Benji is a rare treasure in the rescue world: a bona fide family dog, appropriate for all ages. He is a mild-mannered soul who interacts well with people, other dogs, and even cats. He appears timid at first, but warms quickly to human touch. Benji would be a great choice for a moderately active family who loves to include their dog in a wide variety of family activities. He loves toys, and ball games, and revels in human attention. Bengi loves everyone, and doesn't play favorites, so he would surely be a hit with the kids.

Benji could also join the active home of a single or couple, who enjoy leisurely strolls or brisk hikes. Benji would be up for anything and could adapt to any pace. We haven't noticed that Benji is overly reactive to other dogs or sounds, and we haven't heard much barking, but we know that there is a big old Beagle ballyhoo in there somewhere. We did hear him express an opinion at the McDonalds Drive Thru, when he learned that Micky D's now serves Lobster Rolls in New England. Benji will bark when he has something important to say.

As an adult dog, Benji is beyond the chaotic puppy years and has excellent house manners. He is housetrained and crate trained, but adopters should be prepared to troubleshoot the occasional accident that may occur during his transition to a new routine. Benji is in excellent health, and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DA2PP (distemper, adrenovirus, parvo and parainfluenza), and Canine Influenza. He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
