BESSIE

Our black beauty, Bessie, is a timid girl, who hangs back from the action instead of vying for the center of attention. Just one year old, this delicate flower is navigating the rescue circuit, and its uncertainty is leaving her befuddled.

Bessie's owners had given up on her without much explanation, and dropped her off at a chaotic high kill animal control facility. Despite the betrayal, Bessie seemed to make a lot of friends in the shelter, and she received the best possible rating from the shelter Veterinary staff. Bessie's behavior ratings earned her spot in the Shelter adoption program, but sadly after a few days she developed kennel cough, and was diverted to the euthanasia list. Thankfully, shelter workers sent her to us, so that we could give her the time she needed to get well, and find her forever home.

We think that Bessie is mostly Border Collie, and perhaps, as shelter staff has suggested, a small part Schipperke. Bessie is a robust, medium sized dog, weighing 32 pounds, dead center in the female border collie weight range. She has a full blue-black coat that glistens in the sunlight. She truly is the canine Elizabeth Taylor. She has a full plume tail that she sometimes carries in an arch over her spine, or half mast in a J form. Besse has a wide tuxedo stripe of white on her chest, and tummy, as well as white markings on her muzzle and toes. Her coat is wavy and flat, without an undercoat, and requires brushing a few times a week.

Bessie strikes us as an insecure girl, who needs strong leadership to help build her confidence. As a double dose of working dog, she will benefit from consistent obedience work to boost her self esteem, and give her the sense of purpose that working dogs need to maintain balanced behavior. She has mastered all of her commands, and adopters should be able to get up to speed with Bessie very quickly. Border Collies are well-known to excel in Agility performance, because the course runs channel their herding instincts. No doubt, Bessie could be an Agility Champion, if her adopters are so inclined.

Bessie is best suited to an adult home, with an active single or couple, or family with teen age children, who have the time to focus on her training needs and exercise. While Bessie doesn't strike us as over-the-top hyper, adopters must acknowledge that as a young Border Collie, her exercise needs must be fullfilled. Bessie needs at least three to four brisk leash walks daily, in addition to focused playtime, and an ongoing obedience program. The more action she gets, the more balanced and calm Bessie will be. A bored, frustrated Border Collie is a recipe for disaster.

At first meeting, Bessie seem shy, and takes a minutes to size up strangers. She seems eager to connect with people, and once her initial hesitation subsides, she is extremely warm and loving. She would really blossom through a loving connection with the right person. We have found Bessie to be a little insecure within the dog pack, and would definitely benefit from the companionship of another well-adjusted outgoing Dog. she could easily join a multi-dog home, and would probably be fine with cats.

Bessie has good house manners and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during her transition to a new home. She is in optimal health, and has been recently spayed. She has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus), and canine flu. She has been boostered as needed. She has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been dewormed, and microchipped.
