BLAZE

Our collective mind boggles at some of the situations in which we discover our beloved rescues. Blaze's story is a corker. Three years old, he was dragged into the town pound where his crackpot owners asked that he be euthanized. They described Blaze to our shelter contact as a basket case who went all a-shiver in the face of scary vacuums, bicycles and men in uniform. We translated that to mean: a timid soul, undersocialized, understimulated, and in need of strong leadership.

We were thrilled to have Blaze join us. Immediately, he began to blend into our active multi-dog home. He showed himself to be insecure at first, but as soon as he knew his place, and what we expected, Blaze began to blossom: fear has given way to confidence, still tinged with occasional slight suspicion. We surmised that Blaze had never had much interaction with other dogs, but the power of the pack soon won him over, and now he is happily mixing it up with a diverse cast of characters.

Blaze would be be a fantastic companion to an active single or couple, who enjoy the process of working with a rescue dog. While there are sure to be bumps along the road, as Blaze continues to discover new things that he might find unsettling, a calm, assertive adopter will find Blaze easy to redirect. As time goes on, he will face the world with greater confidence. Although, his Achilles Heel may be thunderstorms, during which Blaze will "blaze a trail" to the nearest pantry or closet. Good thing "Thundershirts" come in size XL.

The ideal lifestyle for Blaze would be an active one, filled with outdoor adventures that take advantage of his Gun Dog nature. Blaze is a gorgeous Fox Red Labrador Retriever, a rare coloration in the Lab breed. He is a tall, strong, lean and athletic dog, bred for outdoor retrieving action. Any games or activities that connect Blaze to his instincts will continue to boost his confidence and resolve any lingering anxiety.

Blaze needs an adopter who wants a deep connection. He is not the kind of dog who can be abandoned to a fenced yard or pen, as an afterthought. He is ingenious at negotiating obstacles that keep him from his person. Blaze wants to participate in life, not sit by the sidelines. He would be much happier on a brisk leash walk, run or hike than wasting away in a back yard.

Blaze could easily join a multi-dog home, with other confident, well trained dogs, and he may do well with dog savvy cats, if the adopters have experience managing a cat/dog household. He would do well in the experienced hands of active adults, whose lifestyle supports Blaze's exercise and training needs. He has excelled at obedience work, and now knows all his commands. Adopters will have the tools in place to communicate with him immediately.

Blaze has excellent house manners and is housetrained and crate trained. He is in excellent health, fully examined with a strong physique with a strong, lean, 52 pound physique and no problematic hips. He has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed.
