BUBBLES

Our effervescent Bubbles was recently surrendered by her owner, along with her sibling, Zoey, to a large high kill animal control facility, where both girls wound up on the daily kill list.  Owner surrendered dogs are at high risk in the shelter system because the stress of losing his/her home so abruptly often causes a traumatic response that can impact behavior evaluations.  Also, shelter staff can determine a dog's fate after only 48 hours because the owner ID process is bypassed.

Bubbles and Zoey exhibited some signs of trauma, but earned good enough behavior evaluations to qualify for the shelter adoption program. Unfortunately, they came down with rip roaring upper respiratory infections that bounced them from the adoption ward to the isolation unit.  At this point, the girls were slated for euthanasia, and came very close to the unthinkable.

These sad girls received a groundswell of Facebook interest, and were brought to our attention.  When they joined our Rescue, the URIs had taken hold, and both girls were sick and depressed.  Bubbles fared much better than her sister, and was up and around after she finished her course of antibiotics.

Once Bubbles was well, we moved her to a satellite foster home, so that we could begin to socialize the sisters separately and expand their chances for adoption.  Bubbles seemed to adapt very easily to her new surroundings, which included several well trained dogs and dog savvy cats.  After a couple days, Bubbles had relaxed so much that she earned herself the nickname, "upside down" dog, because she napped, belly up, all over the house.

Shelter staff peg Bubbles as a Collie and Labrador Retriever mix.  She is a medium sized dog, weighing 38 pounds, and is now at an ideal weight.  She has the trianglular head of a Lab, with long, floppy ears that have distinctive black fringed tips.   We can see Collie roots in her lush, brown and black coat, and bushy, plume tail, that requires some regular brushing, and perhaps professional grooming a few times a year.  Bubbles'coat was filthy and matted to the skin when we first met her, so she made a few trips to our groomer, where she was fairly easy to handle.

During her shelter behavior exam, Bubbles was considerably spooked and this earned her a "no children" rating.  After many months of R and R, Bubbles has relaxed and could easily join an active family with older, dog savvy children.  Bubbles has a slight "give me an inch and I'll take a mile," quality, so adopters will have to be on their game in establishing appropriate boundries and house rules.

Obviously, Bubbles had not been well cared for in her former home, and its no surprise that she is behind the learning curve on obedience commands for her age.  Bubbles has a slightly stubborn nature, and can be slow to catch on, but responds well to both treats and praise based positive reinforcement techniques. Adopters should continue her training, with patient consistency.

Bubbles is an energetic girl, who still has a bit of puppy mojo.  She requires at least two to three brisk leash walks each day, as well as some focused playtime.   She would be a good choice for a active single or couple, and would do well in an apartment setting, where she might be alone during the workday.

Bubbles has good house manners, and is housetrained and crate trained.  Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that could occur during her transition to a new potty routine.  She is an excellent car traveller and thrives on new adventures.

Bubbles is in excellent health, and has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza). She has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been microchipped and dewormed.
