ADOPTED

CAIRO

Our Cairo is an elegant lad, who lost his home recently, when calloused owners dropped him off at a high kill animal shelter. His fate seemed sealed. Owner surrendered dogs have a tough time adjusting to shelter life. One day they leave their cushy digs to go for a big car ride, and wind up in doggie jail. That harsh reality has to be alot to process. Even though Cairo was quite shaken by the betayal, his timid good nature won him many friends among shelter staff.

Cairo charmed his handlers and earned good behavior evaluations, as well as a coveted spot in the Shelter adoption program. Unfortunately, he caught the shelter kennel cough, and was diverted to the euthanasia list. We invited him to our place for a little TLC. After a short while, Cairo is good as new and ready to meet his new family.

Cairo is a very unusual looking dog. He is reported to be a smooth coat Egyptian Saluki, and we see some of that ancient Sighthound breed in Cairo's lean, sleek physique. He has been likely mixed with a smaller breed to reduce his size to just 40 pounds. Our best guess, based on appearance, is Basengi or Dingo. Cairo has the sight hound temperament: he is loyal and loving to family, but, also, he is an athlete, built for speed, who needs a good deal of exercise to channel his yayas.

Cairo would be the ideal walking or running companion to an active single or couple, whose lifestyle affords them enough time for his exercise and training needs. He could also join an active family with older children, provided everyone is on the same page about the time and commitment involved in his care. Cairo is a high energy dog who settles down nicely after he has been adequately exercised. He would make a good walking or running buddy, and has the stamina to keep pace on vigorous hikes. If he is underexercised, Cairo can become a bit high strung and anxious.

At two years, Cairo still has some puppy mojo and is behind the learning curve in basic obedience commands. Obviously, his former owner paid no attention to his development. We have found him to be a quick student, and he genuinely enjoys his training sessions. We recommend that adopters continue with obedience training as an ideal way to bond and establish leadership, but also as a way to provide mental and physical challenge. Also, since Cairo has mostly Sighthound DNA, we discourage off leash activities.

Cairo enjoys the company of other dogs, and has good pack manners. He could easily join a multi-dog home, with other well socialized dogs. He is also not reactive to cats, and would fit in well in a feline environment. He has good house manners and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home.

Cairo is in excellent health, but is slightly underweight at 40 lbs. He should continue a health grainfree diet, with added Omega fats, to increase his weight to about 45 pounds. He has been recently neutered, and has been vaccinated for rabies, DA2PP (distemper, adrenovirus, parvo and parainfluenza), and canine flu. He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, and microchipped.
