ADOPTED

COFFEE

Our Coffee was a tough nut to crack. He came to us with a gigantic chip on his shoulder, and we really had to work at earning his respect! Coffee was understandably peeved at his reversal of fortune, as his questionable owner dumped him in an overcrowded Animal Control facility when Coffee was just four years old.

Coffee is the sort of dog who prefers the status quo, rather than "go with the flow" change. The shelter experience was not kind to him, and he did not make many friends. Further, he had a rough time with the shelter kennel cough, and by the time he showed up on our radar he was on the Euthanasia List, and on his way to full-fledged pneumonia.

When he arrived, he was overweight, showed signs of terrible neglect, and his coat had been butchered by an at home haircut. On top of that, he developed pneumonia and was hospitalized for several days, battling for breath. The recovery was slow, and Coffee endured more than his fair share of poking and prodding at the Vet's office. And while he wasn't always the model patient, over the course of time, Coffee begin to trust and slowly let his guard down, and he has adapted to his new life in Rescue.

Now, a year later, Coffee has transformed into a happy, loving boy who has become one of our house favorites. He is a 100% well, in great health, and his eyes have started to sparkle. Now he's ready to join his new home.

Coffee is a medium sized dog, weighing 44 pounds. He is a mix of American Eskimo Dog and Collie. His gorgeous gold and white coat has grown back to lush fullness, and he has visited our groomer two times with great results. Coffee has the stance and body shape of the standard American Eskimo Dog, but has some of the Collie coloring and size. His coat is thick and requires regular brushing, and perhaps professional grooming a couple times a year.

Coffee would be a great choice for laid back, seasoned Adult Eskie lovers. He is best suited to a calm, quiet home without a lot of hectic comings and goings. Coffee is a big fan of peace and quiet. He bonds beautifully to his chosen people, but then prefers to steer clear of strangers. Coffee needs Adopters willing to put boundaries between him and the world at large, and insist that strangers approach him slowly. Although he is an excellent watchdog, adopters will need to be able to make a correction, or be willing to crate when strangers come into the home. Adopters' family and friends will need to approach him on his terms, and let him get comfortable before they become too touchy-feely. Adopters will need to be comfortable instructing folks how to approach Coffee, so that he feels comfortable and safe when meeting new people.

Coffee is not a good choice for a busy family with children, but he could live happily with another canine housemate, if the dog is calm and well behaved. He has not yet been exposed to cats, but a dog savvy feline housemate is not out of the question. Adopters will need to be patient with Coffee, and allow him to warm up at his own pace. He is not likely to give a Disney moment at the adoption meeting.

Coffee has good house manners and is house trained and crate trained, although adopters should expect to troubleshoot a few accidents during his transition to a new routine. He has begun to master his basic obedience commands, and takes to training very well. Coffee responds positively to both treat-based and leadership techniques.

He is in excellent health and has been neutered. His preoperative blood work was normal and serves as an important baseline going forward. His skin and coat are in A-1 shape, and he has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus), He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
