CONFUCIUS

Our grand Confucius came to us in one helluva a mess. This majestic four year old Chow Chow had been a city stray for some time, judging from the looks of his coat. And, he came to us with the equally pathetic moniker of "Casper," which we couldn't stomach. And so, we have christened his Majesty, "Confucius," because we are fond of grand Monikers to reflect the nobility in our sacred canine teachers. We have not had a rescue dog who hasn't taught us some sort of profound lesson.

And, also, Confucius seems to fit our noble Chow Chow. He seems a calm, wise, peaceful sort. He has entered his foster home and has had his patience sorely tried by a bevy of alpha wannabe Min Pins, who seemed to me more like the Lilliputians to the gentle Giant, Gulliver. Let me just say, that Confucius should be commended for not snacking upon these annoying little beasts, as much as they have gone out of their way to annoy him.

All that is to say, we are seeing a calm and gentle spirit in Confucious. He is extremely affectionate and greets his foster parents with a warm hug each evening. While he loves his ear scratches and bear hugs, Confucius has a somewhat reserved demeanor and does not make a nuisance of himself. He seems to be a laid back, low energy dog, who would prefer a leisurely leash stroll to the 5K run or hike. And, then, he'd be happy to nap by the fire.

Because the Chow Chow breed is powerful and somewhat aloof, we'd like to see Confucius in a home with experienced Chow folks, who understands the nuances of this ancient breed. We'd like to steer clear of small children whose unpredictable attentions might startle Confucius, but we think that he would be a great addition to a multi-dog household, with a moderately active single, couple, or family with teens, who understand the leadership role and are willing to step up to some obedience work. We recommend formal obedience training to facilitate the bonding process and to set the necessary expectations that will ensure good behavior.

Confucius has been thoroughly vet checked and is in good health. He has a healed wound on his front leg, and his coat is in dire shape. He has just returned from the groomers. In the latest pictures (see image on left), his coat is bright and clean, but the clip job is obvious. Long term, Confucius' dry and porous coat... indicating poor diet...will require that adopters maintain his current diet of nutritious, high protein kibbles with added Omega fats, to restore his coat as it grows back to its magnificent, full ruff look.

Otherwise, he is in great shape. A tad thin, at 46 pounds, he should probably round out to about 50-55 pounds for optimal health. He will be neutered before adoption, and already has been vaccinated for rabies, par, distemper, and borate. He is microchipped and de-wormed, and has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia, anaplasmosis.
