COOKIE

"Yikes," was all we could say when Cookie's shelter mugshot splashed across our computer screen, along with desperate pleas for her life, from shelter contacts and Facebook fans, as her days became numbered in the high kill Animal Control shelter.

It's almost impossible to find a female dog of the "Bully" breed persuasion who has not given birth to numerous litters of pups by age two. It seems to be such a predominant phenomenon that these homeless, friendless souls are referred to as "throwaway mommas."

And so, just two years old, our "throwaway momma," Cookie, came to us immediately upon whelping a litter of pups, that were nowhere to be found. She was still lactating, and in hormonal flux, when the shelter spayed her and sent her to us for a new life.

Cookie had legions of fans pulling for her, and she turned out to be just the loving sweetheart that her reputation promised. She seemed no worse for the wear, her spirits high, and she seemed to be relieved to enjoy the simple pleasures in life.

The first thing that we noticed about Cookie was her deep need to connect to people. Often breeding dogs are isolated and the birthing process leaves little time or energy for human contact. Cookie loves people, and would like nothing more than to bond with her special person. She is a high energy dog, in a latent puppyhood, that would do well in an active home. She would be a good choice for a single, couple, or family with older children who have enough time to spend with her. She seems to have been ignored for quite some time.

Cookies official shelter paperwork describes her as a German Shepherd mix. We may see a hint of German Shepherd in her elongated, brown muzzle, but Cookie is a very petite girl, weighing only 30 pounds, and has a lithe, streamlined physique, as well as a graceful neck and head. She appears to us as a mix of a couple of the bully breeds. Our best guess would be Boxer or the much smaller Boston Terrier, who both have characteristic brindle coloring, with white tuxedo marking, and white socks.

Cookie has been friendly to all, and she would do well with experienced adopters who enjoy the training process that leads a rescue dog down the road to canine good citizenship. Cookie's a bit behind the learning curve on basic commands, having been preoccupied with birthin' babies. She is treat and praise motivated, eager to please, and grateful for any attention whatsoever, so her training process should be rewarding.

Cookie has good house manners and is house trained and crate trained. She is in excellent health and has been spayed. She has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza). She has had the 4snap test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been microchipped and dewormed. If you are interested in Cookie, please write to Denise@eskiesonline.com or call Denise at 720-903-0636 for more info.
