ADOPTED

CORA

Our Gorgeous Cora is a high energy, canine "thoroughbred," who has had the best and worst of luck! She came to us a few months ago, at the age of one and a half, from loving owners, who adopted her as a puppy from another Rescue. Cora had been imported from the south, in one of many litters of puppies destined to find forever homes in the Northeast. The dog overpopulation problem in Southern states is overwhelming, and good intentioned folks try to help, but, sadly, it seems that as many times as this blind adoption strategy goes well, it too often goes "south."

As Cora matured, it became painfully obvious that her high energy level and rambunctious personality was a misfit for her family. And although, they loved her dearly, and put her through very rigorous professional training, ultimately Cora was just too much dog for these laid back, novice dog owners. Cora came to us with a lot of our work already done: she knows all of her commands and loves to work for praise and for treats. The key to Cora's well being is lots of exercise, leadership, and discipline.

We believe Cora is a mix of Coonhound and Yellow Labrador Retriever. She is a large, muscular girl, weighing 53 pounds, strong enough to overwhelm some folks. Her breed mix is largely hunting dog, and her instincts are a mixed bag of gun dog attributes. Her ideal adopter would be an active single or couple, who can include Cora on hikes, runs, power walks, camping, or any kind of vigorous activity that will challenge mind and body. Cora would do well with experienced, confidant dog owners, who understand the importance of ongoing discipline and obedience work, and are willing to continue Cora on her path to Canine good citizenship. She's almost there!

We have had a blast with Cora. We've taken her hiking and swimming, and have polished her commands and manners. She really thrives in the outdoors, and has a delightful, impish, playful vibe. Cora is extremely affectionate and revels in any human contact. The more action and exercise that Cora gets, the better. She is not a dog who will be happy relegated to the backyard, and ignored.

We think that Cora could join a multi-dog home if the chemistry is right, and the home has some structure to its atmosphere. A busy family with lots of kids, and high energy dogs coming and going, is too chaotic a lifestyle for Cora to process. She would thrive in a calm, disciplined environment where she can be front and center, and benefit from her adopter's laser focus.

Cora has done well with some dogs and not well with others. She has an Alpha personality, and engages in roughhouse play, which may be too much for some dogs. She's not the type to back down from confrontation with a high energy, ill-mannered dog, and she has not particularly liked our personal gaggle of yappy, ankle biters. On the other hand, she absolutely adores her new buddy Simon, and our Irish Setter, Remington, both youngsters ready to play. We haven't had Cora around cats, but she would likely chase them beyond their comfort level.

Cora's house manners have improved with ongoing training and discipline, but she still has an older puppy vibe, and may need a correction or two about jumping up on Strangers. Cora is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during her transition to a new home. She is in optimal health, and at an ideal lean body weight of 53 pounds. She has lost 17 pounds since March, through exercise and a grain-free diet rich in nutrients and Omega fats. Cora is spayed and has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus), and canine flu. She has been boostered as needed. She has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been dewormed, and microchipped.
