ADOPTED

DEEDEE

DeeDee is one of five dogs that we recently took from a large Amish puppy mill farm in scenic Pennsylvania Dutch country. We are one of many rescues recruited by Laura Amato (featured in the HBO Documentary, "Madonna of the Mills,") that participate in these large group rescues.

For the past six years, Laura has tirelessly worked to convince "millers" to release their disposable dogs: mating pairs and unsold puppies to rescue for adoption rather than destroy them. Euthanasia in the Mill world means getting shot or clubbed to death. Laura and her team are responsible for saving thousands of dogs' lives. We stand in awe of her efforts and are privileged to play our small role.

DeeDee is a lovely three year old American Eskimo who was disgarded, possibly due to her inability to get pregnant. It is unusual in these curcumstances for a pretty young girl like DeeDee to bear no evidence of whelping and we can see clearly that she has never had a litter.

DeeDee with her foster mom, Diane

Her fate was sealed...until Laura Amato stepped in, and now, DeeDee is blossoming in foster care. We have found that puppy mill dogs have special psychological needs that set them apart from other rescue dogs. Mill dogs spend their entire lives in cramped, filthy crates devoid of all but the harshest form of human attention. They seem resigned to their squalid fates and their spirits seem crushed.

One of the biggest challenges that we have found with puppy mill dogs, and DeeDee, in particular, is to build a positive connection to people. For the longest time, DeeDee was shut down and fearful of everyone she met. It was largely through the presence of other rescue dogs that DeeDee learned to trust her foster mom.

Now that some time has passed, DeeDee has made remarkable progress, and would be the ideal companion for a loving, nurturing adopter who enjoys the slow, yet rewarding process of bringing a rescue dog back to life. DeeDee would not be a good candidate for the busy family, with lots of kid action. She would be better suited to the moderately active single or couple who live quietly with another outgoing dog or cat.

DeeDee is a petite miniature Eskie, weighing only 15 pounds. She is a bit underweight and should probably put on two or three pounds to be at optimal weight. She has good housemanners and is housetrained and cratetrained. She is in excellent health and is spayed. She has been vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper and bordatella. She has been dewormed and has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. If you are interested in DeeDee, please write to Denise@eskiesonline.com for an adoption application or call Denise at 720-903-0636 for more information.

Eskies Online is a 501(c)(3) Multibreed rescue group that serves unwanted American Eskimos and other dogs in need. Our group of volunteer foster homes spans the North East, and our adoption territory extends from Maine to eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and parts of northern Maryland. Once an adopter is approved, we arrange transportation. We do not adopt dogs beyond our territory. Please visit our website: www.eskiesonline.com for more information about our group and our adoption procedures.
