DELILAH

One of the most satisfying aspects of dog rescue is witnessing the profound transformation in a dog's spirit from fearful to joyous. Our Delilah is a sublime example of just such a transformation.

Delilah had been surrendered by her owners, after some friction developed with the resident toddlers. Delilah has a shy, timid temperament that could not withstand the unsolicited attentions of kids, so at the age of five, she was abandoned to NYCACC.

Once at the shelter, Delilah seemed shellshocked as she tried to adapt to the harsh and unpredictable shelter life. She was one of those special girls, whose sad brown eyes revealed a timid soul unsure of her place in the world. When she appeared on our radar, we happily invited her to join our rescue, and slowly over the course of the first few weeks, Delilah has blossomed into a relaxed and affectionate girl.

Delilah is an estimated five year old, smooth coat Border Collie, who has lovely harlequin colors and a leggy, athletic physique. She is a medium sized dog, slender at 34 pounds. She could easly reach 40 pounds and be at ideal weight. Despite her breed reputation, Delilah is a moderate energy girl who likes to play the role of wall flower, rather than be the center of sttention.

Delilah strikes us as an insecure girl, who needs strong leadership to help build her confidence. As a working dog, she will benefit from consistent obedience work to boost her self esteem and give her the sense of purpose that working dogs need to maintain balanced behavior. Delilah is best suited to an adult home, with an active single or couple, who have the time to focus on her training needs.

Delilah would be a fantastic companion to an active single or couple, who can provide a fair amount of exercise and leadership. She is reserved at first, but warms quickly to firm and patient human touch. Delilah is easy to handle on lead and tolerant of other dogs. She could easily join a multi-dog home, with one or two calm, well trained dogs. We would like to steer clear of large families with young kids, because Delilah might be spooked by their overzealous attentions.

Delilah has not had much obedience training, but she is responding nicely to basic commands. She seems to enjoy the training, as well as the training treats! Delilah is a quick student, eager to please, and responds to both positive reinforcement and leadership techniques. She has mastered most basic commands, and has passed many of the Canine Good Citizen tests. Adopters should continue her obedience work, not only to foster good behavior, but to give Delilah the mental challenge that she needs each day.

Delilah has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during her transition to a new home. She is in great health and has been spayed, and received routine vaccinations and health screenings. She has been dewormed, microchipped and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick.
