ADOPTED

ELENA

Lovely Elena is typical Eskie: too darn smart for her own good. She took a day trip from the homestead, and wound up in the clink! Elena was brought into NYCACC as a city stray, and after all attempts were made to find her owners, and the mandatory "hold" period passed, she was rerouted to us so that we could find her a forever home.

Elena is a standard American Eskimo Dog, with the smooth flat coat that we sometimes see as a variant from Breed standard. She has a leggy and lean, athletic physique and weighs just 24 pounds. Elena's coat still has maximum Eskie shedding potential, but she's easier to groom than most, requiring regular brushing, but not professional grooming.

Seven years old, Elena has proven herself resilient in the unwieldly rescue process. She has adapted to foster care nicely, and has charmed all of her caretakers. Elena has a bouyant Eskie personality, and she strikes just the right note as an active, but not hyper dog. Elena would be happy with a couple of daily leash walks, followed by lots of one-to-one play and affection.

At first meeting, Elena takes a minute to size up strangers, and then she warms quickly to human touch. She craves human connection, and once her initial hesitation subsides, she is extremely affectionate. Elena would really benefit from a loving connection with the right person. She seems to be insecure, and definitely needs a seasoned Eskie person with command presence, and leadership abilities She would be the ideal fit for an active single or couple, who enjoy the process of working with a disenfranchised rescue.

We have found Elena to be confident within the dog pack, and she seems to enjoy the company of other dogs, especially other Eskies! She could easily join a home with other calm, well trained dogs, but she is not inclined to tolerate ill mannered dogs, or rude puppy behaviors. Elena has a "go with the flow" vibe and can adapt to most circumstances. She loves to go for walks or car rides, travels well in general, and can be that all-around companion dog. She is not reactive to usual stressors like the gas attendants or Dunkin Donuts drive through staff.

Elena has done well with her obedience work and knows most of her commands. She is well on the way to becoming a Canine Good Citizen and motivated adopters can easily take her the rest of the way. Eskies tend to relish their obedience training, and it is one of the best ways to channel their considerable intelligence, and provide much needed mental stimulation. Obedience work is a wonderful way to bond with Elena: she is both treat and praise motivated, and very easy to handle.

Elena has good house manners and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during her transition to a new home. She is in optimal health, and has been recently spayed. She has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus), and canine flu. She has been boostered as needed. She has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been dewormed, and microchipped.
