FRANCOIS

Francois is a beautiful mix of Belgian Sheepdog and Chow, who, at the age of seven, was dumped into a crowded city shelter when his owners moved and couldn't take him along. While his new situation was a shock, Francois behaved as a gentleman in the shelter, walking calmly on the leash, ignoring other dogs. He has integrated beautifully into a couple of multi-dog foster homes.

Francois knows a few commands (sit, shake paws) but has had no formal obedience training, and has an aloof quality at times. He has really blossomed over the last few months. Our statuesque dandy has come out if his shell and is loving life in his lively foster home. His splendid coat has grown back to its former glory after the bum haircut we foisted on him to clear out the mats.

Francois is a sensitive, stately old soul who would do well in a quiet, calm environment without too much stimulation. His particular DNA mix of Belgian Shepherd and Chow creates an instinctive work ethic, but Francois often seems to prefer the lazy dog approach than to honor his breeding. It seems that Francois will observe a pack of scampering, yapping chihuahuas and Min Pins, and know that he should step up and put the kibosh on the caterwauling.... but after he assesses the scope of the task....well, he'd rather have a nap in the sun. If left to his own devices, Francois prefers to relax by the fire and stay out of the way, but in a chaotic, overcrowded foster home, Francois can absorb the anxieties of the other dogs. He would do well as an only dog, or as a second dog in a home where the current dog is pretty well adjusted, calm and laid back. We'd like to steer clear of kids and cats in his new home....we have seen the herding instinct play out on the toddler crowd.

Francois' foster mom adores him, and has been taking him on lots of outings including hikes in the woods, and swims in the ocean. He loves the action, but then is quite content to curl up in a corner for a long nap. Francois is doing well with his new exercise regime, but is not a high energy dog, by any means. He'd do well with a couple of leisurely leash walks each day, as well as some play time off leash. We are working on basic obedience with Francois, and he has responded nicely to leadership and positive rewards based training methods. Francois is willing to please and easy to handle, but can become agitated and irritable with harsh correction techniques. He has great leash manners and walks beautifully at his handler's side.

Francois would make the ideal companion for a laid back single or couple who live a quiet, slow paced lifestyle. He is not a high energy dog by any means, and a leisurely stroll once a day, in addition to frequent potty trips, would suit him well. Francois is a fantastic traveler and car passenger although he is a bit awkward as he climbs into high SUVs. Sometimes, Francois needs a step stool! This beautiful boy is ready to join his forever home and he will charm his adopters silly!

Francois is in excellent health, and has been neutered. He is vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper and bordatella, and he is microchipped and de-wormed. He has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
