ADOPTED

GEM

Our Gem is a statuesque beauty, and gentle soul, who longs for an exceptional connection to her special someone.  We don't know much of Gem's history, but we can safely assume that there was abandonment and neglect at play, perpetrated by some no name scoundrel.  Just one year old, Gem was found living in an abandoned building, terribly emaciated and dehydrated.  Animal Control Officers brought her to the big city shelter, where attempts were made to find her owners. When no one came forward to claim her, Gem was released to us, right before she was to go on the Euthanasia list.

Gem's physical condition was dire, and she didn't have the strength to fight off the shelter kennel cough. She had quite a battle when she first came here.  She developed a full blown respiratory infection and had to be hospitalized for a short time.  Now, Gem has recovered completely, is steadily gaining weight, and is ready to start her new life.

We think that Gem is a mighty Great Dane, mixed with Anatolian Shepherd.  She is a tall, massive beauty, with long legs and an elegant stance.  Her tan and black coat is accented with a splash of white fur on her chest, and snappy white toe "socks."  Gem is still quite underweight at 86 pounds, and should continue healthy weight gain until she reaches an ideal weight of 110 to 120.

Gem strikes us as an insecure girl, who needs strong leadership to help build her confidence.  As a double dose of working dog, she will benefit from consistent obedience work to boost her self esteem and give her the sense of purpose that working dogs need to maintain balanced behavior.  Gem is best suited to an adult home, with an active single or couple, who have the time to focus on her training needs.  She has mastered all of her commands, and adopters should be able to get up to speed with Gem very quickly.

At first meeting, Gem seems shy, and takes a few minutes to size up strangers.  She seems eager to connect with people, and once her initial hesitation subsides, she is extremely warm and loving. She would really benefit from a loving connection with the right person.  We have found Gem to be a little insecure within the dog pack, and sometimes she takes on another unruly dog and tries to make maintain social order.  She could be in a home with another dog, but the chemistry will have to be tested at first for compatibility.

Gem has good house manners and is house trained and crate trained.  Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during her transition to a new home.  She is in optimal health, and has been recently spayed.   She has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus), and canine flu. She has been boostered as needed. She has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been dewormed, and microchipped.
