GUMDROP

One of the most satisfying aspects of dog rescue is witnessing the profound transformation in spirit from fearful to joyous.  Our Gumdrop is a sublime example of just such a transformation. When she arrived from an overcrowded Big City animal control facility, she was subdued and traumatized.

Gumdrop was subdued at the shelter

Apparently, Gumdrop had recently given birth to a litter of puppies, and she was actively lactating when she was picked up by Animal Control Officers. Her puppies were nowhere to be found. Shelter workers experienced fearful resistance from Gumdrop, and it is likely that her hormonal state played a huge part. She was headed for euthanasia, when we learned of her plight.  We happily invited her to join our rescue, and slowly over the course of a few weeks, Gumdrop has blossomed into a relaxed and affectionate girl.

Gumdrop is an estimated three year old German Shepherd/Rough Collie mix, with a whispy hint of the Collie's full coat, and the German Shepherd head shape and black/tan colors.  Her luxurious tail looks like a combination of both breeds.  Gumdrop is a medium sized dog  weighing 35 pounds, but is still underweight from giving birth.  She could easily fill out nicely over the next year to reach an ideal weight of 40 to 45 pounds. We recommend a grain free kibble diet with added omega fats, and high quality protein, as well as nutritious natural treats like pieces of apple, veggies, etc.

Gumdrop strikes us as an insecure girl, who needs strong leadership to help build her confidence.  As a double dose of working dog, she will benefit from consistent obedience work to boost her self esteem and give her the sense of purpose that working dogs need to maintain balanced behavior.  Gumdrop is best suited to an adult home, with an active single or couple who have the time to focus on her training needs.  She has mastered all of her commands, and adopters should be able to get up to speed with Gumdrop very quickly.

Gumdrop is reserved at first, but warms quickly to firm and patient human touch. Gumdrop is easy to handle on lead and tolerant of other dogs.  She could easily join a multi-dog home, with one or two calm, well trained dogs.  We would like to steer clear of toddlers, because Gumdrop might be spooked by their overzealous attentions.

Gumdrop has not had much obedience training, but she is responding nicely to basic commands.  She seems to enjoy the training, as well as the training treats!  Gumdrop is a quick student, eager to please, and responds to both positive reinforcement and leadership techniques. Adopters should continue her obedience work, not only to foster good behavior, but to give Gumdrop the mental challenge that she needs each day.

Gumdrop has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained.  Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during her transition to a new home.  She is in great health and has been spayed.  Gumdrop has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), and she has been boostered as needed. She has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been dewormed, microchipped and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick.
