KIMO

Our Kimo is a real spitfire. At the tender age of one and a half, Kimo finds himself in rescue due to a nasty divorce. I first met Kimo when this family adopted our Maggy May, and I was very impressed with his friendly Eskie exhuberance. Unfortunately, in the last five months -- at the time in his life when training and discipline should have been priority--- his home situation disintegrated into chaos. And, of course, any self-respecting Eskie will take a mile if given an inch.

All that is to say that Kimo is in the middle of a well-needed attitude adjustment at Mike and Diane Couch's house in New York. At first, Kimo was shell-shocked at his life transition and also with the reshuffled pack order of Parker, Jack and Timmy. And, Kimo was underweight and battling a horrendous flea infestation which resulted in some flea dermatitis that, clearly, was driving him nuts. After a few days, he started to settle in and is making progress each day. Here are two of Mike and Diane's updates:

Update number 1

Kimo has become better over the days. Hair is beginning to grow on hind quarters and butt. He is starting to fill out a bit, but it is best that he stay on the slim/petite side. He has become more social. He wants to play with us but is not certain how to play with humans. He 's improving, though, but trust needs time to develop. He plays well and gets along well with our other dogs. Kimo is a beautiful male Eskie, facial features are very symmetrical.

Lastly, I think and Diane does too, that Kimo may be ready for adoption in another few weeks. We think that by then he will be more suited for another change, but this time permanent! He would do best in a setting with another dog for companionship. Kimo is good with kids.

Update number 2

Kimo has made great strides here. He is housebroken, is good with other dogs, likes to walk on leash, is good with kids, eats well, and has shown a little more socialization toward adults. Trust of adults is something that Kimo will take a longtime to develop with his owner. His new owner must be ready to accept a dog that has had little contact with adults while growing up. Kimo is a dog that may act defiant and not come when called, one who will hide, one who will act aloof! But underneath all that armor is a lovable, sweet guy. Because when Diane or I come home from work he gets in with the other dogs and greets us by licking. There are times when we can play mildly with him, and then there are times when he seems to be saying: "Stay Away!"

Kimo wants human acceptance but he just does not know how to take humans behavior. But he is getting better, slowly. Trust takes a leap of faith and Kimo has not taken that yet!

Diane is really warming up to Kimo. He has such a nice side to him that needs time and trust to come forth. An owner who can develop this relationship with Kimo is in for one 'hellva devoted and loyal Eskie!' One other thing, we have been trying to fatten him up, giving him more to eat and more treats than the others. But it has not worked that great. He does look alot better, but being on the slim side is the best for the physical activities he loves. Loves to run full tilt out and leap through the air like a deer."

Judging from Kimo's progress, we think that he will do really well in the home of seasoned, patient Eskie people. We'd love to see Kimo live with another energetic dog, because he loves to run and play so much. If you are interested in Kimo, please call Denise at 617-216-9483
