ADOPTED

LUCAS

Wow! Our big boy, Lucas is a whole lotta dog. Just one year old, this grande gringo tips the scales at 90 pounds and, yet, is surprisingly laid back. Lucas came to us as a city stray, having done some hard time in a large urban animal control facility. After all attempts to locate Lucas' owners failed, he was able to join our rescue for a shot at a new life.

Lucas was a model shelter dog and was unscathed by the chaos. He impressed the vet and staff with his engaging personality and good manners. He earned some of the best behavior ratings available, but was booted out of the adoption program as soon as he caught the signature shelter cold. Lucas came to us sportin' a sniffle, but after a short course of antibiotics, he is 100 percent and ready to meet his new family.

Shelter staff described Lukas as an Akita mix, which may explain his short muzzle, triangular shaped head, and curled tail. We also see a good deal of Belgian Malinois Shepherd in his coat and coloring. In demeanor, Lukas seems to have a touch of the Akita aloofness, and the independent, intelligent nature of the Malinois.

Lucas would be a fantastic companion for an active single or couple who enjoy large breed dogs. Lucas has a moderate energy level, and would be satisfied with a couple of brisk daily leash walks, or he could easily keep pace with his adopter on a daily run or hike. We could also imagine Lucas joining a laid back family with older kids, but his size may be too much for toddlers.

Lucas has been a standout in our Canine Good Citizen classes. He readily works for praise or treats, and the training provides a "job" that seems to speak to his herding nature. Adopters should continue Lucas' training to keep him happy and balanced.

Lucas has excellent house manners and is housetrained and crate trained. Adopters should expect the occasional accident that may occur during his transition to a new routine. Although Lucas is still a one year old youngster, he doesn't present the usual puppy mania or destructive tendencies. He has good stranger manners and isn't prone to jumping on folks in excitement.

Lucas is in excellent health, and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
