MANNY

Our Manny is one of the great comic characters on the current Rescue Landscape. This tiny, 6 pound Chihuahua Yorkie mix (a Chorkie???) is one part Woody Allen and one part Lewis Black. Manny is one dog that gives us a grand belly laugh every time we look at him. But, then, we do have a perverse sense of humor.

Manny is not without his quirks, but rescue has taught us that "one person's trash is another's treasure," so we know that Manny's perfect person is patiently waiting for him. We'd best describe Manny as a stalwart little soldier, on guard, waiting to alert the world to the proverbial "falling of the sky," a sort of Chicken Little," or, more like Gilbert Gottfried, "THE SKY IS FALLING, YOU NITWIT!!!"

Manny came to us with a mysterious hair loss and skin condition, which lightened our financial load by several hundred dollars for diagnostics to discover that there is absolutely nothing wrong with him. It seems that Manny had a mental reaction to shelter stress that kicked his puny butt right into male pattern baldness. Once we moved him into a calmer environment, and switched his diet to a healthy, grain free kibble, rich in nutrients, Manny's coat magically improved. We learned that his hair loss was part stress, part reaction to common additives and grain fillers in commercial dog foods. Nutrition should be a key part of Manny's new life.

Manny is a robust, yet tiny dog, with a short wiry coat that needs minimal grooming. He still has some thin patches around his neck, but overall, his rich Black and Tan coat is coming back with a lush luster. Continued good diet rich in protein and omega fats will improve the thin spots over time.

Manny needs a quiet, calm environment to thrive. He longs to bond to a single soul who needs him as much as he needs him/her. The ideal person for Manny will have a big heart, great sense of humor, and patience to allow him to get acquainted at his own pace. This little guy is so filled with love, that it spills over in buckets, once he settles in.

Manny is not for active families with kids. Rather, he would do well with a single or couple, who have some rescue dog experience, and who enjoy the challenge of nurturing a frightened little soul back into balance. The rewards of this kind of rescue can expand one's soul.

Manny is a smart little problem solver, and will do well in a basic obedience program. Obedience and leadership work will go a long way to build his flailing confidence. Manny is a clever guy, who is quite adept at getting what he wants. Recently we watched, with great admiration, as he meticulously liberated a left over burrito, from a styrofoam carry out container, that had been carefully lodged atop the dashboard. We know well that we should correct such egregious behavior, but we couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity that Manny displayed, as the debacle unfolded.

Manny does pretty well with other dogs, who are calm and well behaved, but he will pitch fit if accosted by a large dog. Our 80 pound Malamute, Hawkeye, can attest to that. He almost gave poor Manny an aneurysm! We think Manny would be fine with laid back cats.

Manny is in great health, and is fully vetted. He has been neutered, and is vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper, bordatella and canine influenza. He has been microchipped and de-wormed and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
