MANNY

Our pipsqueak firecracker, Manny, has just joined us from a rural Animal Shelter, where he spent some time as a country stray. Just three years old, Manny travelled a long road with this shelter, after he tested mildly positive for Heartworm disease, and was relegated to the sick ward for months of treatment and rest. He has completed HW treatment, and has now tested HW negative. Manny has made a full recovery, and has no ongoing complications. In all that time, no concerned owner came to claim Manny, and so he was released to us for placement.

Manny made the best of shelter life by charming not only staff, but award winning photographer, Sophie Gamand, who included him in her "Flower Power" portrait series, which has cast a new light on the way in which shelter dogs are photographed. We LOVE Manny's portrait, but think slyly that we'd hate to see the garden that this little bugger dug up to acquire that snappy chapeau. Manny is not the dog for a faint hearted dog owner with Disneylike expectations.

Manny appears to be a Patterdale Terrier, akin to the Jack Russell Terrier, and bred for hunting fox and other small game. He is a small, muscular dog weighing about 20 pounds, and has a physique and stance meant for business. His smooth coat is a lustrous reddish brown, with a wisp of facial whiskers that give him a serious, distinguished look. His eyes have a golden hue that looks almost lion-like. He is a striking boy.

The Patterdale is a hardwired worker, rather than a show dog, so Manny's tenacious intensity is no surprise. He is an energetic boy, with a well honed prey drive that must be channelled into exercise and obedience work. Hardcore Terrier enthusiasts will hit the jackpot with Manny, who is a relatively rare breed, and embodies all the feisty joie de vivre that fans of these diminutive powerhouses love. Manny is extremely people oriented, outgoing and friendly to all.

Manny would be the ideal companion to an active single or couple, who can provide the calm, alpha leadership and exercise that he needs. He would be a super choice for active retirees, and would be a joyous running, walking or hiking buddy, who could easily adjust his pace to his handlers. He loves the outdoors, and we are even teaching him to swim, as one more outlet for his yayas. Once properly exercised, Manny is ready for obedience work. He now knows his basic commands, and handles well on lead. He is a star student, and is eager to please for praise, treats or the sheer pleasure of work!

Considering Manny's instincts, he would be best suited to a cat-free adult home as an only dog. He is not a big fan of other dogs, although he has made enormous strides with the guidance of experienced handlers, and now displays minimal reactivity when walking on lead. Manny is not the kind of dog we'd like to see off leash in a public dog park, because his considerable Napoleon complex would get him into trouble with much larger breeds.

Manny has good house manners and is housetrained and crate trained. Adopters are expected to be patient and troubleshoot the occasional accident while he transitions to a new routine. He is in excellent health and has been neutered. He is up to date on routine vaccinations, boostered as appropriate, is dewormed and on flea/tick prevention. He has tested negative for heartworm and tick born diseases. If you are interested in Manny, please call Denise at 720-903-0636, or write to Denise@EskiesOnline.com for an adoption application.
