MAX

Our lil Max is a picture perfect Beagle Pup, who at the age of just 11 months, finds himself on the rescue circuit. Two months ago, Max was surrendered by lackluster owners to a high kill animal shelter, because they were inadequately prepared for the rigors of raising a puppy. Beagles are awfully cute little pups, but like any other breed, they require structure and discipline in order to blossom into calm, well-behaved adult dogs.

Max's former owners missed all of his social development cues, and he has seen alot of chaos in his short life. Many pups would have become dazed and confused through this nervewracking rescue process, but Max seems unfazed by it. He has a puppyish exhuberance that charms everyone he meets. He has an amazing, outgoing personality, and is one of the most loving fosters that we have right now.

Max is a bit behind the learning curve on his basic obedience commands. He seems extremely well socialized, but a little unfocused during his obedience rituals. As a Scent Hound, Max is very focused on nature's essence on his daily walks, and sometimes needs extra encouragement to pay attention to his handler. During his training sessions, adopters may wish to use a Halti or Gentle Leader to redirect his nose skyward.

On the other hand, we always find Scent Hounds very easy to entertain, given their single minded focus on whatever is in front of their nose. Max receives a good deal of mental stimulation from a leisurely stroll, as this nose takes the lead.

Max would be a great family dog, and is friendly to kids of all ages. He could easily join an active family, as long as his training needs are not overlooked in favor of other priorities. A dog who has been neglected, needs to be front and center in any family Dynamic, so that the necessary focus is placed on him and maintaining his good behavior. He could also join the active adult home or a multi-dog home. Max loves to play and engages other dogs in play, without drawing a disciplinary rebuke from an older dog. We have not tested him with cats, but an energetic puppy is not often the best fit for a feline home.

Max is somewhat lacking in house manners, as you would expect from a neglected older puppy. He is improving steadily, but adopters will need to puppy proof the premises, and provide a plethora of interesting chew toys to keep Max out of the trash, and away from the Manolo Blahnicks and computer cords. Max is mostly house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home. He is in optimal health, and has been recently neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus), and canine flu. He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, and microchipped.
