PEPITA

Our Pepita is a force of nature! This adventurous Husky/Border Collie mix puppy managed to best us, as she jumped the fence around the dog play yard at our Connecticut foster home, and went a galavantin' around our 85 acre property, before hitting the road to sharpen her herding techniques at a local Alpaca farm.

Problem was, the Alpaca herd was already under the protection of an enormous Anatolian Shepherd, who chased our befuddled, yet ballsy, Pepita into a chilly river, where she swam against current, only to find herself marooned on a small Island in the middle of nowhere. Where, indeed, was Gilligan? Sometimes, we can't believe we used to live in Manhattan.

Well, small towns being what they are, the Alpaca farm worker, who watched haplessly as the debacle unfolded, called local Animal Control, who showed up in their renovated big blue school bus, with the volunteer fire department in tow. One cold water resilient volunteer swam the river, and brought Pepita back to safety. We cried tears of joy at our girl's safe return.

Honestly, we'd expect no less creative hijinks from the offspring of a Siberian Husky and Border Collie. This high energy duo of intelligence and mayhem has produced in Pepita, the Call of the Wild...as well as practical problem solving survival skills, characteristic of the literary great canine archetypes.

Before fulfilling her destiny as a canine action hero, (played by Angelina Jolie Voice Over in the Disney film), Pepita was a city girl. Her lackluster owners dumped her in an Animal Control facility, where she quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite. She is full of personality and panache.

Pepita is a spectacular beauty. She has one blue Siberian eye, and one brown, with a thick, lustrous coat and bushy tail. She is easy to brush and groom, and does not have the dense Husky undercoat. Pepita is tricolored with caramel floppy ears, and black patches on her white coat. She has some sporadic black speckles on her legs and hindquarters. She is a medium sized dog, weighing 38 pounds.

Pepita is a high energy youngster, who is behind the curve on her obedience training. She has begun to grasp the basics of Canine Good Citizenship, and is extremely smart and eager to please. We'd say that Pepita's personality tends more toward the Border Collie than her Husky DNA, as she is extremely intelligent and affectionate without the characteristic Husky aloofness.

The key to Pepita is adequate exercise, obedience and leadership training, as well as work. Any activity like agility, tracking, or even hiking or camping, during which she can schlepp around a backpack would be an ideal way to give her that sense of purpose that Border Collies love.

Pepita would be a fantastic choice for an active home, with a dog savvy single or couple whose lifestyle would allow the time to focus on Pepita's exercise and training needs. She can be suspicious of some strangers, and should have ongoing exposure to new people and places.

Pepita is in excellent health and has been spayed. She has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza). She has had the 4snap test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been microchipped and dewormed.
