ADOPTED

PRINCESS

Our darling Princess needs a patient adopter to help her rebuild her confidence! Just two years old, she was dumped by her lackluster owner into a high kill shelter, where the accommodations are mighty rough, and the stress level is high. Dogs who lose their homes in this abrupt manner are often traumatized, and become fearful and shut down. Princess came to us in an insecure mindset, afraid to walk on a leash.

After a short while, she began to trust, and now, she has made great strides. Princess desperately needs a strong pack leader who will patiently draw out her great potential with lots of activity. She had done well in foster care, and we have implemented alot of confidence building strategies like leash walking, hiking and swimming for exercise and mental stimulation.

We have begun Princess on the Canine Good Citizen program, and she is grasping the basics and making progress. She seems slow to embrace change, so the best approach has been consistent activity and exposure to new people and new situations.

We would describe Princess as a shy, timid soul whose former owner reinforced the fearful behavior rather than addressing it with possitive training techniques. She would not be a good choice for an active family with kids who might have Disney influenced expectations of their new dog. Instead, she would thrive with an active single or couple, who enjoy the process of helping a rescue dog reach full potential. This kind of adoption, like no other, can give intangible rewards and satisfaction.

Princess was described to us as a Dutch Shepherd, but we see more Rottweiler or Doberman Pinscher in her. Princess has a stocky Rottweiler physique, and weighing in at 48 pounds, she has a well-muscled, compact frame, short legs, prick ears and a long, natural tail. Her eyes are a luminous, rich hazel color. She has the black and tan colors common in both breeds; her lustrous coat is short, low shedding, and requires minimal grooming.

Our shelter contacts gave Princess good behavior ratings. She behaved well at her shelter vet exam, although she was reported to be nervous and fearful. No aggression was reported. Her SAFER evaluation corroborated the vet observations, and it was suggested that Princess would be best served by experienced owners who have a solid understanding of dog behavior.

Princess could easily join a multi-dog home, with well balanced dogs and cats. She responds well to other gentle dogs, and a well trained, confident dog would be a fantastic companion for her. Princess has an extremely gentle, sweet nature. She obviously longs for a stable, loving human connection.

Princess is in excellent health and has been spayed. She has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza). She has had the 4snap test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been microchipped and dewormed.
