RUBY

Our lovely Ruby is an athletic beauty, who will greet strangers with a grin, a nudge, and a flip, with the expectation of vigorous belly rubs! Ruby is an outgoing, affectionate girl, who is loaded with confidence and joie de vivre.

Ruby seems unaffected by her uncertain journey in rescue. She was found as a big city stray, and was processed through the harsh animal control system..... another homeless stray to be given an ID number and a cage.

Alarming numbers of nice dogs are earning a "to be destroyed" status in city shelters, through no fault of their own and, only 4 years old, Ruby was on the short list when her plight came to our attention. We could not resist her bewitching brown eyes, and wistful expression

Ruby is reported to be a mix of Whippet and Labrador Retriever. She is a compact, medium sized do, weighing only 25 pounds. Ruby has a lean, lithe athletic form, long legs, with the rich, solid blue-black, short hair Lab coat. She needs minimal grooming.

Ruby did pretty well in the shelter environment, and quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite. She has adjusted beautifully to her new multidog foster home, where she continues to make friends. Ruby generally likes other dogs, and could easily join a multidog home. Sensible precautions should be made to prevent conflicts over food and toys. We have not tested her around cats, but she is likely to chase them.

Ruby is a high energy dog who needs a good deal of exercise to keep an even keel. She would be the ideal companion for an active single or a couple who enjoy hiking, running or brisk walking as a regular past time. Ruby loves the outdoors. An active family with older kids would get a kick out of Ruby on family camping trips. She would thrive in an action packed environment with lots of attention.

Like most of her rescue kindred spirits, Ruby's obedience training has been neglected. She has had no formal obedience work, but loves to please and is easy to work with. Ruby pulls a bit on the leash, but is easily corrected and gets with the program fairly quickly. She is a good candidate for leadership and positive reinforcement training, and could easily earn her Cainine Good Citizenship.

Ruby has good house manners and is housetrained and crate trained. Adopters should expect the occasional accident as part of her transition to a new routine and environment. She enjoys car travel, but would benefit from a safety harness clipped to a seat belt to insure that she stays in her seat.

Ruby is in excellent health and is spayed. She is vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper and bordatella. She is microchipped and de-wormed, and has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
