SAMSON

Our Samson is a magnificent-looking boy. He joined us recently from an overcrowded Animal Control facility, where his bungling owners dumped him. Apparently, they were ill-prepared to deal with an older puppy in their small living environment. That's the problem with puppies, eventually they become ex-puppies.

And so now, just one year old, Samson is on the Rescue circuit. He has conquered the Shelter kennel cough, and is eagerly awaiting his new life. Shelter staff have called him a Harrier, (an English rabbit hunting Hound) and we definitely see the Hound in him. However, we also see the unmistakable broad skull and jowls of a Boxer. Samson seems to have the personality characterisics of both breeds, but he is more inclined to follow his nose than guard the roost.

Samson greets strangers with shyness, but warms up once he's had a chance to assess the situation. Once he bonds with his people, Samson has a lively, robust personality, but he's not the dog that will always grab the center of attention. In the dog pack, he's a little bit reserved, and will back off so that other canine grandstanders can bask in the limelight. He could easily join a multi-dog home with other young adult dogs.

Samson still has quite a bit of his puppy mojo, and needs an active home, prepared for the rigors of raising a youngster. His former owners missed the mark completely on Samson's exercise and obedience needs, so, Adopters should be prepared to provide at least two to three brisk leash walks daily, as well as focused playtime and ongoing obedience work to keep him stimulated mentally and physically. Samson has responded well to basic obedience, both leadership and treat-based positive reinforcement techniques. He is well on his way to Canine Good Citizenship. Motivated adopters should be able to have him CGC certified in short order.

Samson could join an active adult home, with a single or couple, who have the time and energy to meet his needs. Or, he could join an family with older children. Samson is a wonderful family dog, and has lived with children 6 and 8 years old. He has interacted well, but he does play rough and can seem overpowering. He would definitely overwhelm toddlers. He's not a good choice for a feline housemate, since he takes great pleasure in chasing cats beyond their comfort level.

Samson has good house manners, but would benefit from having ample chew toys on hand to distract him from shoes, computer cords, etc; items that puppies find fascinating but eventually outgrow as adults. Adopters must be prepared to puppy proof the premises. Samson is housetrained and crate trained, so adopters will have that tool to use in his transition.

Samson is in excellent health, has been neutered. he has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus), He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
