SOPHIE

Our Sophie is an unusual Beauty. After scratching our collective noggin to figure out her breed mix, we've decided that she has the body of a hound, and the slightly elongated spine and head of a Welsh Pembroke Corgi. Look at those ears! Sophie is a medium sized dog with a muscular frame, yet surprisingly athletic. She is sleek and fast, and weighs just 37 pounds.

So our delightful "Corgi on stilts" came to us from a rural town shelter, where she had been dumped by owners who were gobsmacked that an energetic puppy might indulge in some shenanigans. We are often gobsmacked by folks who expect anything less than an enslaught of shenanigans from a puppy. You can really tell what folks are made of, if they survive the puppy mayhem phase.

We have found Sophie a bit behind the learning curve in her social development. A bit shy and fearful at first, she is coming into her own, as she learns the ropes in a structured rescue foster home. She's having a blast meeting other dogs, and learning the joys of exercise, playtime and obedience training. She would be the ideal choice for a single or couple who have experience raising an older puppy, and whose active lifestyle would provide Sophie with the challenges that she needs. Sophie loves the outdoors, and she would make a great running or hiking companion. The more activity she can engage in, the better she likes it.

Sophie is a fairly sociable dog, but we get the impression that she was an only dog in her former home. At first, she seemed to miss some of the dog pack cues when she entered the playgroup. She is sometimes shy around other dogs, but warms up quickly. She can always be enticed into a game of chase or ball. She could easily join a multi-dog home with other well-trained, calm dogs who enjoy play.

Sophie is a friendly girl, a bit suspicious of strangers at first, but if she is allowed to warm at her own pace, she relaxes quickly. She may not know what to make of energetic toddlers, but she would be fine with older children, who have been properly taught to interact with older puppies. She has an above average energy level, and does require sufficient exercise and play time to keep from getting into mischief. Sophie needs at least two to three vigorous leash walks daily in addition to focused play time.

Sophie is not the kind of dog for the casual dog owner, who isn't prepared to be consistent with leadership and obedience training. Adopters will find that quickest way to bond with Sophie is simply to continue her training. We have begun with obedience basics, and have worked toward Canine Good Citizenship. If adopters continue her training regimen, she should be able to become Certified Canine Good Citizen.

Sophie has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adapter should be prepared to troubleshoot the occasional accidents that may occur during Sophie transition to a new home. She is in good health and has recently been spayed She has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), and Canine Flu. She has been boostered as needed. She has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been dewormed, microchipped and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick.
