ADOPTED

SPANKY

Our Spanky is a big lovebug. Eight years young, Spanky won the heart of our NYCACC contact, Jess, who pleaded his case to us, and we could not resist. Spanky had been surrendered by his questionable owner, to this high kill Animal Control Facility, where he was quickly relegated to the euthanasia list. Even though Spanky received excellent Behavior evaluations, he was passed over in the adoption program due to his age. Seems as though everybody wants to experience puppy hell, and too few people appreciate the considerable benefits of having an older dog, who is well past the puppy mayhem stage.

Spanky hung out with Jess in the Shelter Administrative office, and received a lot of TLC. He was the staff favorite and pegged as quite a charmer. He seemed to fare well during the rescue process, and seemed unfazed by chaotic shelter life. After some initial friction with a few of our randier foster dogs, Spanky settled right in and became a favorite here as well. He's proving to be a very playful pup, behaving much younger than his 8 years. Spanky loves to run, jump and play ball.

Spanky appears to be a mix of Beagle and Yellow Labrador Retriever. He is a medium sized dog, at a Beagle weight of 30 pounds, but the Labrador DNA gives him some extra long legs. Spanky gives the feel of a large dog in a small package. His short flat coat is easy to groom, and is mostly tan with cream markings on his face and feet. Spanky seems more like Yellow Lab in personality, in that he seems to favor athletic retrieving games, over keeping his nose to the grindstone, as Beagles are known to do. He is easy to walk on lead, and has a moderate exercise level. Spanky would be happy with a couple of leisurely to brisk leash daily, and a game of frisbee.

Spanky would be a great choice for a moderately active single or couple, a recent retiree or senior. He could easily do well in an apartment lifestyle, and can be trusted home alone for short periods of time. He could join a multi-dog home with other laid-back dogs, who love to play, and he would probably be fine with cats. Spanky could join an active family with older kids, but we think that he might be intimidated by the haphazard handling of young toddlers. Spanky is a pretty good all-around companion dog, and needs to be in an environment where his golden years will be spent as the light of someone's life, rather than considered an afterthought.

Spanky has not had much obedience training, but he is beginning to grasp the basics. He has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home. He has been neutered, and has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), and Canine Flu. He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, microchipped and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick.
