ADOPTED

LEAH

Talk about a brown-eyed beauty! Leah has just joined our rescue, along with her housemate, Lola. Both of these spectacular looking girls were abandoned by their owner in a suburban animal hospital during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. After a lengthy stay in the vet facility, the girls were declared abandoned and turned over to animal control so that the adoption process could start. Leah did not fare as well as her pal in the chaotic environment, and she quickly became sad, depressed and fearful. She was a bit of a distrustful of shelter and vet staff, but quickly became a favorite amongst the volunteers who took her for her daily walks.

Leah was passed over in the shelter adoption program due to the post Sandy circumstances. The shelter saw unprecedented numbers of abandoned dogs during the Sandy crisis, as well as diminished numbers of potential adopters. Leah's time was coming to an end, so we invited her and Lola, to join our rescue. Both girls were transported to our partner boarding facility so that we could buy them some time until we had open space in one of our foster homes.

We love Leah's elegant look and think that she is a petite mix of German Shepherd and Labrador retriever: a medium sized dog weighing only 40 pounds. We see the majestic stance and bearing of the stalwart Shepherd "on a mission," as well as the trangular head with elongated snout. The Lab influence can be seen in Leah's cute partially floppy ears, and short, flat monocromatic coat.

Only one year old, Leah has already survived disaster and betrayal. She is ready for some patient TLC from adopters who enjoy the thrill of helping a rescue dog achieve balance and fulfill potential. Leah is best suited to a moderately active single or couple who have time to focus on her basic training. As a youngster, Leah hasn't had much attention paid to obedience and leadership work, but she is quite a people pleaser and very responsive to rewards based positive reinforcement techniques.

We think she'd do best in a quiet adult home with folks who could commit to at least a couple of brisk leash walks each days. Leah has a reserved nature and is not overly high energy, but does need a fair amount of exercise and focussed playtime to maintain her good behavior. A tired dog is always a happy dog!

Leah has good house and doggie manners. She could easily join a multi-dog home with medium energy, well trained dogs, but she has not been cat tested. She is housetrained and crate trained, but adopters must be prepared to forgive the occasional accident that will occur during her transition.

Leah is in excellent health and has been spayed. She has been vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper and bordatella. She is microchipped and de-wormed, and has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. Due to a dire shortage of foster space, Leah has been a guest of our partner boarding facility until we had room in one of our foster homes. If you would like to sponsor Leah, and help with the boarding expense, we accept tax deductible donations to our Paypal account: Denise@eskiesonline.com.
